Java Tech Lead

The Role We are looking for an experienced Tech Lead to lead backend engineering initiatives and a team of engineers building scalable, high- performance systems that power real-world business workflows. The role requires strong hands-on technical expertise along with the ability to lead a team, drive engineering practices, manage delivery, and ensure the quality and scalability of solutions. You will work closely with product managers, architects, engineering teams, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions. IMPACT What You’ll Do • Lead and mentor a team of backend engineers, providing technical guidance and support. • Own features and technical initiatives end-to-end: design → development → testing → deployment → production support. • Understand business and product requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions. • Assign tasks, track progress, manage dependencies, and ensure timely delivery of team commitments. • Conduct technical discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions, and mentoring within the team. • Identify technical risks, blockers, and dependencies and work with stakeholders to resolve them. • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code following strong engineering principles. • Design and build RESTful APIs and event-driven microservices. • Monitor and troubleshoot production issues; drive root cause analysis and corrective actions. • Optimize application performance across CPU, memory, database queries and GC behavior. • Participate in and drive technical design and architectural discussions. • Contribute to architectural improvements and long-term platform scalability. • Review code and ensure adherence to coding quality standards, design principles and engineering best practices. • Support team members in solving complex technical and production challenges. • Participate in resource planning, estimation and technical effort assessment for projects and features. LEAD THE TEAM Leadership & Management Team leadership • Assign work based on skills and priorities • Set goals & expectations for team members & track deliverables. • Provide constructive technical feedback • Own performance reviews, evaluations, and ratings. • Identify skill gaps and enable team growth • Mentor engineers through complex challenges • Manage team leave and attendance. Cross-functional leadership • Coordinate with Product, QA, DevOps and Architecture • Handle technical escalations and blockers • Contribute to technical evaluations and interviews • Support onboarding and knowledge transfer • Balance hands-on contribution with delivery ownership THE ENGINEERING BAR Technical Expectations We are looking for a Tech Lead with strong backend depth and the ability to guide implementation across the team. BACKEND & FRAMEWORKS • Core Java (JDK 17+) • Spring Boot (latest releases) • Deep JPA/Hibernate internals: entity lifecycle, caching, fetch strategies, N+1 problems and query optimization • Design patterns and clean architecture principles • Ability to review and guide technical implementation across the team DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS & MESSAGING • Apache Kafka (preferred) or similar pub-sub systems • Event-driven architecture • Distributed systems challenges: idempotency, retries and eventual consistency • Designing and reviewing distributed, scalable backend solutions DATABASES & PERFORMANCE • Strong RDBMS expertise: MySQL / PostgreSQL • Query optimization and indexing strategies • Performance tuning and memory management • Heap usage, GC behavior, CPU utilization and DB performance monitoring • Ability to identify and guide resolution of application and database performance issues
