Slitter operators have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
- Performing safety checks on equipment to ensure that it is functioning properly before production begins
- Inspecting slitting machinery for defects and making repairs as needed
- Installing new equipment or machinery, including programming computers and troubleshooting problems with existing equipment
- Reading drawings or other instructions to determine the number of sheets that will be produced by a run, and adjusting settings accordingly
- Monitoring equipment operation to ensure that it continues to run smoothly, efficiently, and safely
- Maintaining logs of production cycles and equipment maintenance activities
- Operating slitting machines by using hydraulic controls to start and stop equipment and to adjust blade height and tension settings
- Observing gauges to monitor cutting speed, tension settings, blade alignment, and blade sharpness
- Installing, operating, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing equipment used to cut up large rolls of material into smaller rolls
