Role Overview: Painting with Light and Atmosphere

As a Lighting Artist at DNEG India, you will serve as the final cinematic brushstroke for our visual effects pipeline. Your primary mission is to integrate multi-pass elements, balance color palettes, establish dramatic mood, and orchestrate light interactions to make digital assets look indistinguishable from reality.

Working hand-in-hand with compositing, look development, and layout teams, you will take raw rendered shots and transform them into visually arresting scenes. You will interpret directorial notes, balance complex render layer passes, troubleshoot technical rendering bottlenecks, and ensure that every frame meets the uncompromising visual standards expected of major Hollywood tentpoles.

Key Responsibilities

• Shot Lighting & Composition: Design, build, and refine lighting setups that elevate the narrative mood, depth, and emotional tone of live-action and CG plates.
• Look Integration: Collaborate closely with look development and asset departments to ensure materials, shaders, and textures respond realistically to custom lighting rigs.
• Render Optimization: Optimize scene files, manage render layers, and troubleshoot complex technical bottlenecks to ensure efficient pipeline delivery.
• Cross-Departmental Synergy: Coordinate seamlessly with compositing and FX teams to ensure smooth hand-offs and absolute visual continuity across sequences.
• Artistic Execution: Consistently deliver high-end artistic results under tight production deadlines while maintaining strict adherence to show style guides.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Professional Background: Proven, hands-on experience working as a Lighting Artist within professional visual effects, feature film, or high-end episodic production environments.
• Software Mastery: Strong proficiency in industry-standard 3D software suites and modern rendering engines (such as Katana, Houdini, Maya, Arnold, or equivalent tools).
• Artistic Sensibility: An exceptional eye for photographic lighting, color theory, value balance, shadow falloff, and cinematic composition.
• Technical Problem-Solving: Ability to analyze render bottlenecks, optimize heavy scene files, and troubleshoot multi-pass compositing hand-offs independently.
• Collaborative Mindset: Outstanding communication skills and a team-oriented attitude suited for a fast-paced, dynamic studio atmosphere.
