About the Role : As an AI Automation Engineer, you will help shape how work is automated, orchestrated, and continuously improved across Avalara. You will lead the design and engineering of scalable AI powered automation solutions, using n8n as a core orchestration platform to improve productivity, quality, and operational scale. This is a highly visible individual contributor role that combines hands on engineering, platform ownership, and technical leadership to accelerate business transformation across the organization. You will partner with teams across Avalara to embed intelligent workflows, AI agents, and data-driven decisioning into business processes while establishing standards that enable secure, reliable, and measurable automation. This is a full-time role with Avalara, offering a fully remote work arrangement.What Your Responsibilities Will Be : - Own and help execute Avalara's enterprise AI automation and transformation strategy, with n8n serving as a core workflow orchestration platform.- Design and build scalable, secure, and resilient automation solutions that reduce manual work and improve business process efficiency.- Develop AI-enabled workflows, intelligent agents, and decisioning frameworks that support business transformation across multiple functions.- Architect API-first and event-driven integrations that connect enterprise systems, automation platforms, and AI services.- Establish platform standards for development, deployment, monitoring, reliability, and governance across automation initiatives.- Define and maintain CI/CD processes, environment strategies, and release practices that improve automation quality and delivery speed.- Create reusable automation frameworks, workflow templates, prompt patterns, and AI agent accelerators that increase consistency and reuse.- Implement observability, monitoring, alerting, and performance measurement practices for both traditional and AI-driven workflows.- Lead technical design reviews, workflow assessments, and post-incident reviews to improve platform reliability and operational excellence.- Mentor engineers and implementation partners while promoting best practices for AI automation, agent orchestration, responsible AI, and workflow engineering.What You'll Need to be Successful : - Bachelors degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field and 10+ years of experience in enterprise automation, workflow engineering, integration engineering, or platform architecture.- Deep hands-on experience with n8n or Boomi, including designing and operating enterprise automation solutions and AI-enabled workflows.- Strong expertise in API-first and event-driven architectures, REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, JWT, and secure integration practices.- Experience implementing CI/CD, automation governance, observability, and reliability practices across enterprise-scale platforms.- Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, including AI and machine learning services and large language model integrations.- Demonstrated ability to identify high-value AI automation opportunities, build AI-enabled solutions responsibly, measure business impact, influence technical direction, and raise engineering standards through mentorship and leadership.12-Month Success Signals : - Enabled AI-native automation capabilities, including production-grade AI agents integrated into core workflows.- Improved automation reliability and reduced workflow failure rates and/or MTTR.- Standardized automation patterns, including AI-enabled orchestration patterns, adopted across new transformation initiatives.- Implemented measurable observability, including AI performance, business impact, and cost metrics.- Delivered AI-driven automation use cases that reduce manual effort, improve decision-making, or shorten process cycle time across multiple functions.- Raised execution standards across the automation team through mentorship, technical leadership, and AI capability development.Avalara is an AI-first Company : AI Expectations : As an AI-first company, Avalara expects this role to embed AI into how automation and transformation work is designed and executed.This role will : - Design and implement AI-enabled workflows and transformation patterns that materially improve speed, automation, and scale.- Use AI tools to optimize development productivity, workflow diagnostics, process analysis, and root-cause investigation.- Identify high-value AI automation opportunities tied to efficiency, reliability, employee experience, or customer impact.- Apply AI responsibly with appropriate governance, security, and risk considerations.- Elevate AI capability across the automation team by sharing best practices and driving measurable adoption.- This role must demonstrate applied AI impact - not casual tool usage - and quantify improvements enabled by AI-driven automation and transformation.
